Every turbocharged vehicle on the road stands to benefit from a downpipe upgrade. The Mk7 VW is no exception! With an OEM downpipe built like a brick wall, the TSI engine literally chokes on its own exhaust. To solve this problem we created a wide-open, high-flow downpipe upgrade that seriously uncorks the Gen3 TSI engine. Our downpipe delivers significant midrange and massive top-end horsepower and torque gains felt immediately upon installation. No low-end power is lost, making this bolt-on modification a fantastic upgrade for anyone and everyone.
The success of our downpipe is deeply rooted in the construction. We start with a custom CNC machined v-band that mates exactly to the factory turbocharger. In place of the catalytic converter we use a smooth, 180° 3" mandrel bend. Piping routes carefully through the firewall, joined by a double-braided stainless steel flex section to absorb engine movements. The first portion of our downpipe terminates behind the subframe with a tabbed flange. Bolted securely to this flange, our CNC machined hanger bracket supports the entire exhaust system.
The remainder of our downpipe is comprised of two components that can be mixed and matched at any time. First to bolt-up is our high-flow catalytic converter. We use a Magnaflow 200 cell/inch catalytic converter for optimum flow. On race day this catalytic converter can be easily swapped for a test pipe. Next we connect a reducing adaptor that slides neatly into the factory sleeve clamp.
By moving the catalytic converter downstream we dramatically improve the flow of the exhaust as it exits the turbocharger. In order to do this we also have to move the second oxygen sensor well beyond the reach of the wire and electrical connector. To solve this problem we created a plug & play male-female oxygen sensor wire extension that we include with EVERY downpipe. This extension uses OEM connectors and silicone high-temperature sleeving for a perfect fit!
From the turbo to the sleeve clamp our downpipe provides maximum power gains without leaks, rattles, or vibrations. We include everything needed for installation including an oxygen sensor wire extension. Two configurations are currently available and all modular components are available individually. Street series downpipes include a Magnaflow high-flow catalytic converter. Race series downpipes include a test pipe. Additional adaptor options will be created as the cat-back exhaust market develops. All configurations can be upgraded to stainless steel construction with optional v-band flanges.
Due to the undeveloped nature of this platform, additional fitments cannot be added until new models are released in the US and tested by 42 Draft Designs. Please do not order this downpipe to "test fit" on a similar vehicle without first contacting 42 Draft Designs for approval.

Every 42 Draft Designs exhaust system is scratch-built from straight tube and flat steel. Our team of professional metal fabricators cut, bend and form raw materials with precision. Piping is mandrel bent in-house using our Baleigh CNC mandrel bender. Flanges and brackets to fit each system are cut on our OMAX waterjet. Additional forming takes place using our Huth end forming equipment and our Dake 100 ton press. We use ONLY the finest North American made materials proven to stand the test of time.

Every component of each individual exhaust system is treated to a precision assembly and test fixture. These fixtures allow our fabrication staff to accurately build, weld, and test each assembly. Nothing's worse than a product that doesn't fit; so we work smart to ensure every system fits like the first.
After assembly each exhaust system is TIG welded by our team of professional welders. Our welders take their time, preparing, welding and inspecting each joint with care. From raw material to final welding we never rush, cut corners, or take shortcuts.
Due to the exacting nature of our fabrication process it's normal for your exhaust system to require a few days of fabrication before shipping. Many of our systems are in stock; however it would be impossible for us to stock our entire exhaust system lineup. In the past 10 years we've found that our customers are more than willing to wait a few extra days - especially for a complete system that's built to last.
Throughout our exhaust systems we use the highest quality American made materials. Our piping is shipped directly from the mill, wrapped in a crate to prevent dents and scratches. We use heavy gauge aluminized steel and stainless steel tubing designed for mandrel bending. Flanges, brackets and hangers are cut from cold roll steel. Hot roll steel is more economical, but we're willing to pay more for clean, flat steel free of scale and glazing.
In the end, our attention to detail and demanding material choices increase the retail price of our exhaust systems. When compared side-by-side with the competition our products always stand out. We use better materials that are proven to stand the test of time. We put more time and more care into each of our exhaust systems than anyone in the business. Quality, performance, fitment accuracy, and your satisfaction are standard features of all 42 Draft Designs exhaust systems.
42 Draft Designs downpipes are available in two series: Street and Race. Street series downpipes include a catalytic converter. Race series downpipes include a test pipe. If you're having trouble deciding which downpipe series to choose we recommend Street. Chances are you'll be driving your car on public roads, so keep it legal and grab a test pipe for race day.
Stainless Steel
Our stainless steel upgrade is straight-forward. We build your system using 304 stainless wherever possible. Starting with the flanges, we use 3/8" thick 304 stainless steel for every flange. Flanges are cut with precision on our OMAX Waterjet. Piping is mandrel bent per system using our CNC Mandrel Bender. We use the highest quality 304 stainless tubing designed for mandrel bending. Mild steel components such as 02 bungs and hangers are replaced with 304 stainless steel equivalents. We even replace the hardware with stainless steel bolts & copper locking nuts. Nothing is left to chance.
If road salt and extreme winters are in your future, consider upgrading to stainless steel.
Please add 2-5 days to the advertised fabrication time when purchasing our stainless steel option. Due to the size of our exhaust lineup it's impossible for us to stock every system in stainless. Typically, stainless exhaust systems are made-to-order. If you are facing a deadline, please contact us before ordering for an accurate lead time.
V-band Flanges
42 Draft Designs now offers v-band connection flanges with our stainless steel exhaust systems. Compared to 3-bolt flanges, exhaust systems built with v-band flanges are easier to install and adjust. V-band connections don't require a gasket, and can be serviced with a single tool. Overall, v-band flanges speed-up initial install and race-day component changes.
Our v-band flanges are CNC machined in-house from 304 stainless steel. We've created a male/female fitment specification for our flanges which aids in sealing the connection. We use Clampco stainless steel v-band clamps. Due to the material cost and manufacturing time, v-bands will remain a premium option.

**Beware Of Shiny Junk**
We are well aware that the internet is full of shiny stainless steel exhaust systems sold for unbelievable prices. These "stainless steel" systems are hardly exhaust systems. They are barely stainless steel and almost always a poor copy of an US or European system. The material used to make these systems is not certified or regulated. It's mostly US scrap metal shipped back on empty cargo ships. There's no telling what "grade" this material is. It's much thinner than advertised and typically breaks at the hot spot. What they claim are stainless steel flanges are really just thin, plasma cut hot roll steel flanges dipped in a chrome bath. Most of the time their "TIG" welds are just sloppy dress-up passes over MIG welds that are way too hot. There's more to tell, but I think we've made our point.
42 Draft Designs uses ONLY the finest North American made 304 stainless steel. We're not messing around. Our material is certified grade 304 stainless steel. We maintain our 16 gauge pipe thickness and 3/8" flange thickness when building our stainless steel systems. Every joint is meticulously TIG welded. Nothing is ground, sanded, brushed, polished, coated or otherwise covered up.
In the end, our attention to detail and demanding material choices are reflected in the value of this upgrade. When compared side-by-side with the competition our stainless steel fabrication always stand out. We use better materials that are proven to stand the test of time. We put more time and more care into each of our stainless steel exhaust systems than anyone in the business. We don't hide sloppy work by polishing our systems.
This simple downpipe upgrade should be first on your list.
Most horsepower upgrades come with a list of hidden caveats. Our Mk7 Downpipe does NOT. In fact, we can't find anything we don't like about the upgrade. Power gains can felt immediately after installation. Boost is much more responsive, building steadily without major spikes and holding out longer. Throttle response is greatly improved, boosting around-town driving, highway merges and casual passing. Useable midrange power gains are followed by a dramatic increase in top-end power. No low end power loss is felt. Like we said... no caveats. This simple downpipe upgrade should be first on your list!
So, how much power does this downpipe add?
It's impossible to definitively state how much horsepower and torque this downpipe, or any downpipe may provide. Power gains will always depend on the condition of your motor and supporting modifications. However, we can state with complete confidence that our 3" downpipe will deliver the highest gains possible when replacing a factory downpipe.

8/1/2014 We tested our 2015 GTI on the dyno @ Tuning Tech. At the time of testing the car was equipped ONLY with APR stage 1 software. Power runs with the stock downpipe were conducted to roughly match APR's numbers for our 93 octane file. After completing multiple runs with our 3" street series downpipe we measured peak gains of 18hp and 17ft-lbs at the wheels! Top-end gains were incredible. The car struggled to reach full RPM with the OEM downpipe but ripped all the way to 7100 with the downpipe installed. We measured top-end power gains signifcantly greater than our peak numbers!
